Limited English proficiency can present significant barriers for immigrants to fully participate in life in the United States — from securing good jobs to accessing education and engaging in civic life.
The increasing gap in digital literacy in our technologically advancing world further compounds these challenges.
Michigan United’s English Second Language (ESL) classes foster collaborative, supportive learning environments using online tools for self-paced, independent learning.
Join us as we make a difference in the lives of adult immigrants in Grand Rapids, Michigan, through this once-a-week ESL class.
Responsibilities:
As the English Instructor for Adult Immigrants, your responsibilities will include:
ESL Class Preparation & Instruction: Devote 1 hour a week to meticulously prepare ESL classes and 2 hours a week to skillfully instructing students, amounting to a total time commitment of 3 hours per week.
Volunteer Coordination: Recruit and coordinate volunteers to support the ESL classes, fostering a thriving learning community.
Effective Communication: Keep students and volunteers informed about upcoming events and confirm their attendance through weekly emails.
Personalized Support: Provide one-on-one assistance to ESL students during class, fostering their English language growth.
Follow-up & Engagement: Conduct follow-ups with ESL students, encouraging regular attendance and active participation in the learning process.
Virtual Motivation: Extend support and motivation to students outside of class, inspiring their continuous progress.
Qualifications & Requirements:
We are looking for individuals who possess the following qualifications and meet the requirements:
Passion for Immigrant Communities: Demonstrate genuine interest in immigrant communities and a sincere desire to support their English language learning journey.
